What the registration numbers show

Since 2016, Georgia's registered-voter rolls have grown substantially, and Pew Research Center's analysis found that Black, Latino, and Asian American registrations accounted for a large share of that growth. That shift put Georgia in a small group of states where the electorate changed shape within a few cycles.

Why registration is not turnout

A registered voter is not a vote. Registration data comes from the state's rolls and updates continuously. Turnout data comes from elections and describes who actually showed up. Reporting that treats one as proof of the other is where most of the confusion enters the conversation.

Both numbers matter for anyone trying to understand Black political power in Georgia, but they answer different questions and are collected by different agencies on different schedules.
