WHERE THE
CULTURE LIVES

We are the digital heartbeat of Black Atlanta. More than a website — this is a movement. A curated celebration of Black excellence, entrepreneurship, art, food, events, history, and community that thrives in every corner of the A.

Our Origin

We started in 2002 as BlackLanta.com — a play on "Hotlanta." It was catchy, but hard to spell. We purchased BlackAtlanta.com and in 2003 redirected BlackLanta here.

Founded by ATL insiders who walk the walk (and love a good wings spot just as much as a museum night), BlackAtlanta.com was built to connect, amplify, and empower the people who shape the soul of the city — from the West End to Stone Mountain, from Cascade Road to Edgewood Ave.

The Full Story

THE STORY OF
BLACKATLANTA

Atlanta's Online Urban Renaissance

Part I · 1991–2002

The Spark: From Muskogee to Morehouse

In 1991, a campus tour of Morehouse College collided with Freaknik weekend. Atlanta was alive — music on every corner, culture in full color. That energy planted the seed. A 4.0 freshman year, every Freaknik weekend experienced, and a 3.67 GPA at graduation later — the lesson was clear: confidence is currency and discipline earns you access. Those Morehouse years became the blueprint for what would become BlackAtlanta.com.

Part II · 1995–2002

The Early Internet Hustle

Atlanta in the '90s was magic — Black-owned banks, developers in tuxedos, TLC at Eric Sermon's Rim Shop, OutKast jumping out of a Lexus before they blew up. A pharmaceutical job taught web design — HTML, servers, databases — long before YouTube tutorials. In 2002, Blacklanta.com launched as a play on "Hotlanta." But everyone kept adding the missing syllable. A pager-based WHOIS tracker was built to alert the moment BlackAtlanta.com became available. One night the pager buzzed. One phone call to GoDaddy turned an idea into equity.

Part III · 2002–2008

The Early Success

Those first years were all sweat equity — every image uploaded by hand, every banner coded line by line. Linux, PHP, MySQL, Joomla, WordPress before they were cool. Then came Charles, a visionary developer who helped build the first custom CMS before "CMS" was a buzzword. Brands started calling: Cadillac, General Motors, Ford's multicultural division, Akademiks during NBA All-Star Weekend. BlackAtlanta.com became proof that Black media could stand toe-to-toe with corporate platforms and still keep its soul.

Part IV · 2008–2020

The Pause

Then came the tidal wave — BlackPlanet, MySpace, Ning, Facebook. Community went corporate. A partnership with Rob, who owned dozens of "Black City" domains, led to BlackUSA — a national aggregator. It was visionary, but every city needed local heartbeat, boots on the ground. Life shifted, businesses grew, and BlackAtlanta quietly rested. But it never died.

Part V · 2020–Now

The Renaissance

Today the world has come full circle. Big social networks feel impersonal; people crave local again. BlackAtlanta.com is relaunching — not as nostalgia, but as necessity. A hub where Black-owned businesses, creators, and professionals connect, collaborate, and get seen. A platform using technology to rebuild economic and cultural unity. Back in the early 2000s our slogan was "Atlanta's Online Urban Renaissance." Two decades later, it's still true.

Founder's Note

BRANDON
JOHNSON

"You can't fake the work when you've lived the evolution."

When I first built BlackAtlanta.com, I didn't have investors, agencies, or algorithms. I had vision, discipline, and a pager that buzzed at the right moment.

Two decades of building, pausing, learning, and returning have taught me that the culture doesn't wait — and neither should we. BlackAtlanta is our story. We are the story.

📍 Based in ATL. Made for the World.
