Production moved here
Georgia became one of the country's busiest production states, and Atlanta became its base. For Black creators, that meant working in a city with a Black crew base, Black-owned vendors, and an audience that was already here.
Tyler Perry Studios
Tyler Perry Studios, headquartered in Atlanta, established Perry as the first African American to outright own a major film production studio. Through its 34th Street Films arm, the studio also produces work by other filmmakers, which matters more than the headline: ownership that only houses its owner is a career, and ownership that houses other people is an industry.
The next build
In June 2021, Perry and T. D. Jakes announced the purchase of more than 130 acres in southwest Atlanta, including a proposed publicly accessible entertainment district with theaters, retail, restaurants, and a Georgia film and television museum. In 2026 the studio was building a virtual production facility in Atlanta.
