The label that made the city a center
LaFace Records was founded in Atlanta in 1989 by Antonio "L.A." Reid and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. It was home to some of the top-selling pop, rhythm-and-blues, and rap artists of the 1990s, and it helped establish Atlanta as a music center rather than a stop on someone else's tour.
The duo that defined the sound
OutKast — Andre Benjamin, known as Andre 3000, and Antwan Patton, known as Big Boi — are an Atlanta-based hip hop duo whose run in the 1990s and 2000s made the city's sound a national reference point rather than a regional one.
Why the business mattered as much as the music
Atlanta's hip hop economy is unusually self-contained. Artists here built studios, labels, management companies, and club circuits in the same city they were from, which is why the scene produced executives and owners at the same rate it produced performers. That structure is the reason Atlanta is still described as a capital rather than a scene.
